What's happened
The Denver Broncos have defeated the Seattle Seahawks 17-14 in overtime as Ja’Quan McMillian intercepts Sam Darnold and Wil Lutz boots a 53-yard winner. Darnold has thrown seven interceptions this season, matching his TD total, while Denver’s defense has sacked him 17 times across the game’s span.
What's behind the headline?
Analysis
- The game exposes Seattle’s offensive fragility as turnovers consistently derail drives, with Darnold’s two interceptions and a late one in regulation nearly sealing the loss.
- Denver has leveraged a stingy defense to compensate for limited aerial production; the team is relying on pressure from its front seven to create game-changing plays.
- The key turning point was McMillian’s OT pick at the Denver 43 and Lutz’s finish, highlighting the leverage of field position in a tight match.
- This contest will likely widen questions about Seattle’s offensive efficiency and whether sanctions on the line’s protection will be addressed, and it will reinforce Denver’s identity as a defense-first contender.
- Expect Denver to push for more consistent offensive output in coming weeks, while Seattle must address protection and turnover issues to avoid another close loss.
How we got here
Darnold’s turnover-heavy start to the season has overshadowed a Broncos defense that has repeatedly risen to the occasion. Seattle, meanwhile, is dealing with a stalled offense and a string of late-game miscues. The Broncos’ win comes after a bruising six-week stretch had left their offense searching for explosiveness.

Sam Darnold - American football player (born 1997)
Samuel Richard Darnold (born June 5, 1997) is an American professional football quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the USC Trojans, becoming the first freshman to win the Archie Griffin Award. Darnold was selected third overall in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft by the New York Jets, where he spent his first three seasons. After injuries and inconsistent play, Darnold was traded to the Carolina Panthers, alternating as a starter and backup for two seasons, and spent one season as a backup with the San Francisco 49ers. Darnold had a breakout year in 2024 with the Minnesota Vikings when he led them to the playoffs and earned Pro Bowl honors. He joined the Seahawks the following season, leading them to their conference's top seed and a victory in Super Bowl LX while earning a second Pro Bowl selection. Darnold was widely considered a draft bust before signing with the Vikings, and his turnaround to a Super Bowl–winning starting quarterback is regarded as one of the greatest comeback stories in NFL history.
