What's happened
MI5 has issued its annual threat update, highlighting a shift from radicalised right-wing violence to broader threats. Iran and Russia are cited as key hostile actors, with AI-based risks to security also flagged. The document underscores the need for greater resilience as threats diversify.
What's behind the headline?
The Emerging Threat Landscape
- MI5 has signalled a shift toward more violent, ideologically driven threats from multiple sources, including domestic right-wing actors and international state-backed plots.
- Iran is described as expanding hostile activity in Britain, with ambitions to target hard targets such as military sites.
- Russia is identified as an ongoing adversary, with cyber and political interference continuing to complicate national security.
- AI is highlighted as a force multiplier for attackers, potentially enabling targeted propaganda and bioweapons research.
reader impact and forecast
- The combination of sovereign-state activity and domestic extremism will likely increase pressure on security services and civil society.
- The next 6-12 months may see intensified investigations and higher public security measures, especially around critical infrastructure and places of worship.
- Readers should expect ongoing coverage of AI-enabled threats and state-sponsored risks as authorities build a more integrated threat assessment capability.
How we got here
The update situates threats within a wider international context, noting that regional tensions have spillover effects inside the UK. It also references recent prosecutions and incidents connected to Iran and Russia, and the rising interest in AI-enabled threats.

This followed in 2019, with a new 500 m pier to the west of the harbour, and new marina unveiled as part of a £330 million investment in the area.
