What's happened
Buenos Aires hosts Ratapalooza, a rat- and mouse-adoption fair tied to Team Ratas, which rescues lab rodents for homes. The event supports veterinary care and foster networks across Argentina and Latin America, highlighting that lab-raised rodents can be healthy pets, while noting concerns about disease risk amid a hantavirus outbreak.
What's behind the headline?
Analysis
- Ratapalooza showcases a growing societal shift toward rehoming animals from laboratories, framing lab rodents as viable pets when properly cared for. This challenges common perceptions that lab animals cannot transition to homes.
- The initiative has built a sizable, engaged community (60,000+ Instagram followers) and relies on veterinary expertise in exotic animals, underscoring professionalization of pet-rodent adoption.
- Public health context, including hantavirus concerns linked to wild rodents, is raised by supporters to differentiate lab-raised animals from wildlife-transmitted diseases, but experts stress these lab animals are generally healthy if unexposed.
- Critics on social media persist, yet advocates argue the program prevents euthanasia and expands animal welfare options.
How we got here
Team Ratas began in 2016 to rehome lab rats and mice after a friend told Verdier the university no longer needed them. It has since built a network of 90 foster homes in Buenos Aires and nearby towns, rescuing thousands of animals from 11 facilities and labs.
