What's happened
Spain has accelerated its general election to November 29 as nationwide protests over housing reach a peak. The government has introduced emergency housing decrees, while opposition parties contest the measures. Polls show the conservative PP leading, with Vox possibly acting as kingmaker in any coalition. The vote tests a fragile left coalition against rising right-wing forces.
What's behind the headline?
Analysis
- Spain’s housing crisis has become the defining issue driving the snap election, amplifying voter anger over rents and evictions rather than broad policy gains.
- The left’s strategy hinges on portraying Sánchez as a defender of tenants; the right argues the decrees risk reducing supply and normalising intervention.
- The timing ties economic performance to social fears; voters may reward clarity on housing or punish perceived policy drift.
- The outcome could reshape Europe’s political spectrum, with potential implications for migration and social spending debates across the continent.

How we got here
Since 2018, Pedro Sánchez has led a fragile coalition government. Housing affordability has become a top public concern after rents surged and an eviction of an 87-year-old resident sparked protests. The government has proposed decrees to protect tenants, but faces parliamentary resistance and a looming election.

VOX (Spain) - Spanish political party
Vox (Spanish: [boks]; Latin for 'voice'; often stylized in all caps) is a national conservative political party in Spain. Founded in 2013, it is led by party president Santiago Abascal, and vice president and secretary-general Ignacio Garriga. Vox has been described as far-right or radical right. The party entered the Spanish parliament for the first time after winning seats in the April 2019 general election. Later that year, it received 3.6 million votes in the November 2019 general election, winning 52 seats and becoming the third-largest party in the Congress of Deputies. Its public support reached its peak within the next few years, according to the results of subsequent regional elections and opinion polling, but in the 2023 Spanish general election showed worse results: a loss of 19 seats in parliament (albeit remaining the third-largest political party in Spain with roughly 3 million votes). In the European Parliament, the six deputies of Vox are members of Patriots for Europe after a stint in the European Conservatives and Reformists Group.

It is one of the largest metropolises on the Mediterranean Sea, located on the coast between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat and Besòs, bounded to the west by the Serra de Collserola mountain range. According to tradition, Barcelona was founded by either the Phoenicians or the Carthaginians, who had trading posts along the Catalonian coast. In the Middle Ages, Barcelona became the capital of the County of Barcelona. After joining with the Kingdom of Aragon to form the composite monarchy of the Crown of Aragon, Barcelona, which continued to be the capital of the Principality of Catalonia, became the most important city in the Crown of Aragon and its main economic and administrative centre, only...
