What's happened

Record-low Danube levels have forced Romania to shut both reactors at the Cernavodă plant, which has produced about 20% of the country's electricity, and to declare an energy alert for August. • Officials have been altering the river channel: the navy has carried out controlled blasts, dredging and sinking barges filled with rock to reroute flow. A prolonged heatwave and drought have cut Danube flows to 30-year lows across several countries. BBC Business reported that plant director Romeo Urjan has told AFP he does not expect a restart within 10 days and that the second 706MW reactor was disconnected on Thursday, noting Cernavodă had only been shut once before in 2003.
