American Airlines expands premium cabins on 777-300ER

What's happened

American Airlines has begun retrofitting its Boeing 777-300ERs to feature a larger premium cabin. The first aircraft is in service from New York to Buenos Aires, with upgrades across all 20 planes planned for 2027. The new layout includes 144 premium seats, including 70 Flagship Suite business-class seats, 44 Premium Economy, and 30 Main Cabin Extra seats, while Flagship First is being eliminated.

What's behind the headline?

The premium push is accelerating

  • Premium seating now accounts for about 44% of seats on upgraded aircraft, up from 38%.
  • The change reflects a broader industry trend where higher-end offerings are growing faster than economy.
  • Airlines like Southwest and JetBlue are expanding premium elements (lounges, first-class-like seats) to attract higher-spending travelers.

What this means for travelers

  • Expect higher ticket prices in premium cabins, but more lie-flat options and privacy on long-haul flights.
  • The shift could pressure lower-fare options and influence route profitability.

Industry implications

  • As premium revenue strengthens, carriers will continue reallocating space from traditional first to business-class products.

How we got here

The move follows American’s 2022 decision to drop international first class to reallocate space to business-class seats. The retrofit aims to narrow the profit gap with rivals Delta and United as premium travel grows.
