President has endorsed both South Carolina runoff candidates in a bid to influence the outcome of the gubernatorial race as polls show a tight contest ahead of the June 23 runoff.
What's behind the headline?
Analysis
- The president’s decision to back both Evette and Wilson signals a hedging strategy designed to preserve influence in a crucial GOP battleground.
- With Evette leading in some polls and Wilson pressing in others, the runoff is likely to hinge on ground game, turnout, and alignment with Trump’s broader MAGA base.
- The narrative around Epstein and prior endorsements may continue to shape voter perceptions, potentially defining the next phase of the Republican primary calendar.
- Readers should watch for last-minute endorsements or cross-endorsements that could tilt local sentiment ahead of June 23.
How we got here
The June 9 primary in South Carolina did not yield a majority for either Pamela Evette or Alan Wilson, setting up a runoff. Trump has shifted strategy, endorsing both candidates in the runoff to maximize influence in a key Republican state. Analysts note Trump’s endorsements have impacted several races this year, though not uniformly successful.
