Two-day London Marathon doubles field to 100,000

What's happened

The London Marathon has announced a one-off two-day event in 2027, expanding participation to a record 100,000 runners and raising tens of millions for charities, with elite and mass events split across the two days.

What's behind the headline?

Analysis

  • The Two-day London Marathon marks a dramatic shift in mass-participation sports, prioritising inclusivity and fundraising while cautioning about city-wide logistics.
  • This will likely boost charitable giving and tourism, but raises questions about urban impact and scheduling for other events.
  • The split format could set a precedent for future city races, pressuring planners to balance accessibility with city operations.

Forecast: Expect heightened lobbying around large-scale city events and a potential re-evaluation of major marathons globally.

How we got here

Organisers confirmed the plan after exclusive Guardian reporting. The event is set for April 24-25, 2027, backed by the London mayor’s office, with major concerns from Transport for London over capital disruptions now addressed.
