What's happened
A Nanotyrannus skeleton, nicknamed Jodi, has sold at Sotheby’s in New York for $47.3 million, the second-most valuable dinosaur fossil ever auctioned. The specimen, about 19.6 feet long and 9.6 feet tall, belongs to a distinct genus and was discovered on a Montana ranch in 2019. The buyer is anonymous for now. Critics warn such private sales risk losing fossils to research and public display.
What's behind the headline?
- The story hinges on the tension between private sale value and public scientific access.
- The reporting highlights expert opinions that privately held fossils risk losing research value, contrasted with museum access narratives.
- This narrative will likely influence public opinion on fossil markets and museum funding.
- Readers should consider how private ownership affects future research and education.
How we got here
The skeleton’s sale follows recent discoveries confirming Nanotyrannus as a distinct genus, not juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex. It is one of only three such skeletons known to science. The auction underscores a broader debate in paleontology about private sales versus public museum access.
Our analysis
The Guardian reports the sale and quotes experts like Thomas R Holtz Jr. and Linda Ivany expressing concern about private ownership limiting public access; New York Post notes the anonymous buyer and historical context including Gus's sale; BBC Business provides scientific context and quotes Megan Jenkins on Nanotyrannus distinctions.

Tyrannosaurus rex - Dinosaur
Tyrannosaurus () is a genus of large theropod dinosaur. The type species Tyrannosaurus rex (rex meaning 'king' in Latin), often shortened to T. rex or colloquially T-Rex, is one of the best represented theropods. It lived throughout what is now western North America, on what was then an island continent known as Laramidia. Tyrannosaurus had a much wider range than other tyrannosaurids. Fossils are found in a variety of geological formations which have been dated to the late Maastrichtian age of the late Cretaceous period, 69 to 66 million years ago, with isolated specimens possibly indicating an earlier origin in the middle Campanian age. It was one of the last known members of the tyrannosaurids and among the last non-avian dinosaurs to exist before the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. Like other tyrannosaurids, Tyrannosaurus was a bipedal carnivore with a massive skull balanced by a long, heavy tail. Relative to its large and powerful hind limbs, the forelimbs of Tyrannosaurus were short but unusually powerful for their size, and they had two clawed digits. The most complete specimen measures 12.3–12.4 m (40–41 ft) in length, but according to most modern estimates, Tyrannosaurus...
