What's happened
Sainsbury’s has agreed to sell Argos and the Habitat brand to Swift Partners. The deal will complete in February 2027 with full separation by 2029. Argos will continue to operate normally during the transition, and staff will transfer to Swift. The move allows Sainsbury’s to focus on its core groceries business.
What's behind the headline?
Brief
- Argos is being detached from Sainsbury’s core grocery operations to focus on groceries.
- Swift Partners plans to invest in Argos’ digital capabilities and expand the brand, including potential standalone stores.
- The deal preserves Argos’ store-in-store model and Nectar loyalty, while Habitat moves with Argos to Swift.
What this means for customers
- The Argos and Habitat brands will continue trading with existing arrangements during the transition.
- Shoppers will still use Nectar and benefit from the same pickup options while the two businesses separate over the next few years.
Outlook
- The separation is expected to take place by 2029, with completion in early 2027. The deal aligns with Sainsbury’s strategy to prioritise food.
How we got here
Sainsbury’s bought Argos and Habitat in 2016 as part of a strategy to create a combined food and non-food retailer. The sale follows months of talks and previously explored interest from JD.com. Swift Partners is led by Richard Pennycook and Trevor Strain, backed by Matt Truman and True Capital. The transaction includes Argos’ standalone stores, its presence inside Sainsbury’s stores, and logistics assets.

Homebase - British home improvement retailer and garden centre
Homebase was a British home improvement and garden centre retailer that operated across the United Kingdom and Ireland. It was founded by British supermarket chain Sainsbury's and Belgian retailer GB-Inno-BM in March 1981, as Sainsbury's Homebase. By the end of the 1980s, it opened its 50th store, making it the UK's fourth biggest home improvement retailer. The retailer purchased rival Texas Homecare in January 1995, which helped grow its market share to third place, behind B&Q and Focus-Wickes. In 1999, it was renamed Homebase, and then sold to Schroder Ventures in December 2000. In November 2002, it was sold to Argos Retail Group, which later became Home Retail Group in October 2006. In January 2016, Wesfarmers purchased Homebase in a botched attempt to convert the stores to its Bunnings Warehouse format, ultimately losing £1 billion in total. In August 2018, Homebase was sold to restructuring firm Hilco for £1. Subsequently, Hilco announced that it would close 42 of the chain's stores, and cut 1,500 jobs through a company voluntary arrangement (CVA). By February 2020, Homebase had 164 outlets and had returned to profitability earlier than expected, with Hilco listing the retailer...
