What's happened
CAF president Patrice Motsepe has publicly backed Gianni Infantino in the upcoming FIFA presidential race, praising his support for African football. The stance follows European, Asian and North American criticisms of Infantino’s plans for a FIFA subsidiary and investment rules. The next FIFA president election is scheduled for March in Rabat.
What's behind the headline?
REMEMBER: This piece should be concise, clear and anchored in the live event.
- The CAF show of support signals a consolidation of backing for Infantino within Africa, potentially pressuring other regions to align or respond.
- The tension around Infantino’s plan for a commercial subsidiary to run FIFA events remains a flashpoint for governance debates in world football.
- Readers should watch for how other confederations respond and whether Montagliani’s expected bid will materialize, which could shape the March Rabat vote.
Forecast: If European and North American critics persist, Infantino’s opponents may struggle to consolidate a broad, credible alternative before the vote.
How we got here
Motsepe’s remarks come during a CAF strategy meeting in Cape Verde, where delegates from 54 member federations discussed Infantino’s leadership. Fears over governance, transparency and private investment in World Cup events have intensified after European federations pulled support earlier this year. Infantino has retained backing from Saudi Arabia and Conmebol, while Ramon Vega is the lone announced challenger so far.
