What's happened
The BCCI has named uncapped fast bowler Auqib Nabi as Bumrah’s replacement for India’s tour of Sri Lanka after Bumrah withdrew with knee discomfort. Nabi, from Jammu and Kashmir, earns his first senior call-up, while Sai Sudharsan’s participation remains subject to fitness clearance. The series starts in Galle on Aug. 15.
What's behind the headline?
- Nabi’s selection marks a historic first for Jammu and Kashmir in the India Test team, underscoring the board’s push to broaden the talent pool. - Sudharsan’s fitness clearance is a potential variable for inclusion in the touring party. - The tour’s start in Galle and Colombo places emphasis on subcontinental conditions and spin-friendly surfaces. - This move could signal a longer-term strategy of blooding younger pace options as India manage workload across a busy calendar.
How we got here
Bumrah sustained a knee injury while fielding in a ODI against England in July and is rehabilitating at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. Nabi has taken 104 Ranji Trophy wickets over the last two seasons and 60 in 2025-26 to help his domestic team win the title. He also impressed for India A on tour of Sri Lanka in June-July.
Our analysis
AP and Al Jazeera report that Nabi’s call-up follows Bumrah’s knee injury and that Sudharsan’s fitness clearance remains under review. AP notes the spin balance with Jadeja and Jain in squad; Al Jazeera highlights Nabi’s domestic success and his status as Kashmir’s first senior India call-up.
