AFCON to stay biannual as CAF reverts plan

What's happened

CAF has reversed a December plan to shift AFCON to a four-year cycle, returning Africa Cup of Nations to a two-year cadence. The next edition will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in 2027, with further tournaments in 2028, 2031 and 2033; there will be no AFCON in 2030 due to the World Cup, and the competition will not be staged in a FIFA World Cup year.

What's behind the headline?

Context and Implications

  • CAF’s decision reflects a pragmatic response to the Nations League’s timeline and funding hurdles, prioritising immediate development for African football.
  • The schedule alignment with the World Cup cycle remains a driver; CAF will avoid a World Cup-year tournament as before, maintaining player availability for clubs.
  • Hosting in 2027 will be a three-country bid (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda), signaling Africa’s capacity for continental events across East Africa.
  • The move may ease calendar congestion for African leagues, while still raising questions about long-term revenue and exposure compared with alternatives.

Forecast

  • Expect continued focus on commercial partnerships and sponsorships to fund future AFCON editions.
  • Other confederations will watch CAF’s approach as a template for balancing tradition with sustainability.

How we got here

CAF had proposed a four-year AFCON cycle and a biennial Africa Nations League to modernise revenue and development, but concluded the Nations League would take too long to deliver financial and developmental gains. The Executive Committee then decided to reinstate AFCON every two years, arguing it best serves African football and its 54 member associations.
