Vondrousova banned for four years, ITIA says

What's happened

The ITIA has handed Marketa Vondrousova a four-year ban after she refused to provide a drug-test sample at her home last December. The tribunal found no compelling justification for her actions, and her suspension runs until June 2030. Tomljanovic criticises the process as unfair and inconsistent within the sport.

What's behind the headline?

Embedded context

  • The dispute centers on whether at-home testing procedures respect player welfare while maintaining fair competition.
  • Ajla Tomljanovic has framed the ruling as an indictment of ITIA, arguing inconsistent treatment across players.
  • The tribunal’s decision hinges on whether the player's fear and stress constitute a valid reason to refuse testing.

What’s likely next

  • Vondrousova will appeal, but the tribunal’s decision will stand pending any successful challenge.
  • The ITIA will likely refine its outreach on testing safety and consent.

How we got here

Vondrousova refused a drug test in December 2025 after an at-home test encounter. She said safety and mental-health concerns motivated her refusal, a claim the tribunal rejected. The case highlights ongoing tensions between athletes’ welfare and anti-doping protocols.

Our analysis

The Guardian quotes Ajla Tomljanovic calling ITIA “cocky” and unfair; The Telegraph details the 8pm testing window and Vondrousova’s safety concerns; both sources cover the tribunal’s ruling and timing of the ban.

  • International Tennis Integrity Agency - International tennis organisation

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) is the organisation responsible for safeguarding the integrity of professional tennis worldwide. It was established following a comprehensive review of integrity in the sport. The ITIA assumed responsibility for administering the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program on its formation and for the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme on 1 January 2022. In addition to prevention, education and drug testing activities, it gathers intelligence and investigates competition manipulation, most notably match fixing in tennis. It has the ability to impose fines and sanctions, and ban players, umpires, and other tennis officials from participating in sanctioned tournaments. The ITIA is an initiative from the International Governing Bodies (IGBs) of professional tennis: the ITF, ATP, WTA, and the four Grand Slam tournaments (the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open). The organisation assumed the responsibilities of ITF's Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU, 2008–2020). The ITIA is legally independent of the IGBs and makes its own decisions on investigations and prosecutions. In this respect it is unusual in global sports.
