What's happened
Dungote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has launched an IPO for roughly 3% of the plant, aimed at broadening ownership among Nigerians. The IPO opened today with a minimum subscription of 10 shares at 5,250 naira per share. Regulators and analysts warn about currency risk and the possibility of share price volatility as the offer runs through October.
What's behind the headline?
Analysis
- The IPO is framed as broad-based wealth sharing, but ownership remains highly concentrated (Dangote retains a large stake).
- Currency headwinds and the dollar-denominated dividends are central risks for domestic retail investors.
- The offer aligns with Nigeria’s and Africa’s ambitions to build local refining capacity and reduce import dependence, but success hinges on broad retail participation and credible post-listing performance.
- The narrative remains sensitive to macroeconomic volatility, with potential market implications if the IPO under- or oversubscribe.
How we got here
The Dangote refinery, opened in 2024 near Lagos, is Africa’s largest fuel producer with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day and plans to expand to 1.4 million bpd by 2030. The IPO strategy, styled as an “IPO for the people,” follows a private placement that raised $2.5 billion and seeks to democratise wealth by enabling ordinary Nigerians to own a stake.
