Ants are eusocial insects whose colonies range from dozens to millions, organized as superorganisms with workers, soldiers, drones, and queens.
Prosecutors have sought a one-year prison term and a 10,000 pound fine for a Seoul restaurateur after admitting to serving ants as a topping in a 15-course menu. The court will sentence the restaurant on 2 September; the restaurant holds two Michelin stars and is in Gangnam. Ants were not on Korea’s approved insect list and were reportedly used over four years, with estimates of up to 49,000 ants across about 12,200 portions.
