Researchers have captured the Sun’s surface at higher resolution than ever using the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope and other facilities. The images have revealed Kelvin–Helmholtz vortices—feathery, 500–2,000km spirals of magnetised plasma—that explain how magnetic energy can cascade to smaller scales and feed explosive space weather events.
Archaeologists have restored a curved ceiling vault at Pompeii to resemble the original banquet-hall shape, revealing a Dionysus–Ariadne scene. The work, presented at an international workshop, adds to earlier finds including a large private bathhouse and a display of 79 AD eruption casts.
