Anak Krakatau has erupted since late Friday, producing lava fountains and ash plumes up to 50,000ft and forcing temporary closures at Soekarno‑Hatta and multiple regional airports. Authorities have suspended operations at several airports, delayed or cancelled hundreds of flights and stranded tens to hundreds of thousands of passengers while marine and air exclusion zones remain in place.
Airports around Jakarta and neighboring provinces have reopened after days of closures due to volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau. Authorities are inspecting runways and aircraft as flights resume, with some services still limited while ash emissions continue to be monitored.
A speedboat carrying five photojournalists, two crew members and a route guide has lost contact after leaving Carita, Banten, bound for Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait. The last message placed them near the island's waters; rescuers are still unable to locate them as Anak Krakatau remains active and flights in the region are disrupted.
