The shortlist includes Ilfracombe, Isle of Bute, Lerwick, Sandown, Strabane, Stockton Town Centre Ward, Corby, Great Yarmouth, Leith, Pontypridd, Port Talbot, Basildon, Birkenhead, Grimsby and Rotherham. The decision will be made by an independent panel early next year.
Fires at waste facilities linked to lithium‑ion batteries have escalated, provoking safety concerns and costing up to £1bn a year. Data show 1,518 battery-related fires in the year to March 2026, with batteries blamed for most incidents at recycling centres and bin lorries. Experts call for safer disposal and new policies as incidents rise across major cities.
