The American Red Cross has declared a national blood-supply crisis after donations fell to a four-year summer low and inventories dropped sharply. Hospitals are drawing heavily on limited stocks, especially type O blood, while extreme heat, wildfire smoke and foodborne illness are reducing donor turnout. Canadian supplies have also declined, and a Pentagon trial will test paying ambulances to carry blood.
