Italy’s national gendarmerie, military force handling inland policing
Divers have uncovered a 2,000-year-old shipwreck near Mazara del Vallo, packed with hundreds of wine and oil amphorae. Italy’s culture ministry says the vessel dates to the 1st or 2nd century BC and will be documented and protected as researchers study its cargo and origins.
Thieves have taken three panels from Antonello da Messina's San Gregorio polyptych and a small double-sided devotional panel from the Regional Museum in Messina late on Aug. 15 during the city's Vara procession. Two panels were later abandoned near the museum. Authorities are investigating a likely commissioned theft and probing how alarms were circumvented.
