In the spotlight over Ugandan security matters: recently tied to Elwelu gun possession allegations; alongside Uganda’s Somalia force withdrawal discussions.
Uganda has begun phased withdrawals of its troops from Somalia, with the first cohort returning home. Officials say all forces will depart by the end of 2027 as Somalia takes greater security responsibility amid funding uncertainties for AU missions and the UN end of its political mission.
Uganda’s former deputy defence chief, Gen. Peter Elwelu, has been arrested on charges of subversive activities. Security forces claim he stockpiled weapons and planned to destabilise eastern Uganda, with 15 firearms, fatigues and two pickup trucks recovered. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has publicly separated from Elwelu and warned of consequences for those aiding his escape.
