Civil War-era cannonballs were found in an Alabama airport luggage screening; fort remains a key historic bastion guarding Mobile Bay.
Five Civil War-era cannonballs were found in a passenger’s checked bag at Gulf Shores International Airport. Officers determined they were inert, and authorities traced the artifacts to Fort Morgan, with a juvenile suspected of removing them from storage. The grandmother unknowingly carried the items; charges were not pursued and the cannonballs have been returned to the fort.
