Hannah Rapp, 26, a rising featherweight boxer, has died after being struck by a car in Brazos County, Texas. Charles Medina, 31, has been arrested on manslaughter charges. Authorities say Medina allegedly overtook the cyclists, reversed, and struck Rapp. Rapp had recently challenged for the WBC title and had relocated to Texas.
A Eurocopter EC130 B4 has gone down in Samburu County, Kenya, killing seven people on board, including five Americans and Ecuador’s intelligence chief Michele Sensi-Contugi. Investigators say the cause is not yet established and recovery efforts face rugged terrain.
Faith Tenkley, 23, has safely landed a small plane in the Atlantic off Boca Raton after engine failure and broken landing gear. She navigated to open water, avoiding people and structures; no injuries reported. She was en route to the Bahamas to pick up her parents.
Florida has carried out its 14th execution of the year. Harold Gene Lucas, 74, has received a three-drug injection at Florida State Prison after waiving post-conviction appeals. He was convicted for the 1976 murder of Jill Piper and attempted murders of two friends. The governor has signed death warrants for two additional executions later this September.
Daniel Owen Conahan Jr. has been executed by lethal injection in Florida for the 1996 kidnapping and murder of Richard Montgomery, closing a chapter in the Hog Trail murders investigation. Investigators identified him as a person of interest in other linked deaths but he faced no charges in those cases. Florida leads executions this year among U.S. states.
