British Labour politician, health secretary (1997–1999), MP for Holborn and St Pancras (1979–2015)
Starmer has announced he is stepping down as MP for Holborn and St Pancras after 11 years, triggering a by-election. He has cited a shift in focus to international affairs and other issues. The leadership transition follows Labour leadership changes and electoral pressure within the party.
A by‑election has been set for 8 October after Sir Keir Starmer has resigned as MP. Labour has selected Camden council leader Sagal Abdi‑Wali and the Greens have chosen leader Zack Polanski, turning the contest into a high‑profile test of Andy Burnham's early premiership and the Greens' electoral momentum in inner London.
