Second crewed NASA Gemini flight; tied to AI model releases and leadership reshuffle at Google/Alphabet
Google has reorganised its AI leadership: Demis Hassabis has stepped back from day-to-day running of DeepMind to become its chair and Alphabet chief scientist, and Koray Kavukcuoglu has been promoted to senior vice-president to run Google DeepMind. Several senior engineers, including Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat, have left to launch a new startup; Alphabet shares have fallen.
Google has unveiled Gemini 4 Argon, a frontier AI model the company says leads benchmarks in coding, cybersecurity and long-horizon professional work. The model has been rolled out to trusted cybersecurity partners and internal teams while Google conducts further safety testing and readies paid subscribers for phased access.
Google has begun rolling out Gemini 4 Argon to paying Prime and Ultra users, with limited access for lower tiers. It touts Argon’s coding, cybersecurity and knowledge-work strengths, while restricting access for many. The company is keeping earlier Pro models live for now.
