Belarus’s second-largest city, administrative centre of Gomel Region
A US-brokered local ceasefire around Oleshky in Ukraine’s Kherson region is holding as aid delivery and civilian evacuations proceed. Residents face years of shortages and uncertainty about returns; some evacuees travel toward Ukrainian-held territory, others toward Russia. First Lady Melania Trump has helped broker the pause with international and local coordination.
Ukrainian residents from Oleshky have evacuated via a four-day ceasefire, landing in Gomel, Belarus, before returning toward Ukraine. Authorities say the ceasefire is holding, enabling demining and delivery of aid, with about 1,700 residents remaining in the city of 24,000 before the conflict.
