Largest settlement in Hawaiʻi County, gateway to Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea
The National Hurricane Center has warned that wind and rainfall impacts are growing, but exact location and severity remain uncertain. Fausto is roughly 1,300 miles west of Baja California and 1,600 miles east of Hawaii, with winds near 100 mph. Swells are triggering dangerous surf and rip tides in southern California, while Bertha has dissipated after a Gulf Coast impact.
Hurricane Genevieve remains a Category 4 storm offshore in the East Pacific, with winds around 140-160 mph. It is weakening as it moves northwest, while swells are causing life-threatening surf along southern Baja California and the Mexican coast. Tropical Storm Lala has strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane and has lashed Hawaii’s Big Island with heavy rain and strong winds, causing at least one death, widespread power outages and property damage. A second system, Moke, has formed south of the islands with tropical-storm‑strength winds and will bring additional heavy rain.
