Hong Kong's journalists' trade union and rights advocate
Hong Kong's court has acquitted Dow Jones Publishing Co. (Asia) of dismissing a journalist for union activity while convicting on the charge that it prevented or deterred union participation. The case centers on Selina Cheng, former WSJ reporter and HKJA chair, who argued her firing was linked to her union role.
Three veteran Hong Kong activists — Lee Cheuk-yan, Chow Hang-tung and Albert Ho — have been sentenced to between five and seven years after convictions for inciting subversion under Beijings 2020 national security law. The sentences follow convictions in August and will include time already served, rights groups and foreign governments have condemned the verdicts.
