Morocco's conservative monarchist party shaping coalition politics
Morocco’s 23 September legislative elections are underway, with 15.8 million voters registered. The vote shapes Parliament and government formation amid concerns over youth employment, economic pressures, and trust in political institutions. Campaigns emphasize domestic issues, campaign rules, and debates over party switching and leadership, as the political map evolves post-2021 defeat.
Moroccans have gone to the polls to elect 395 deputies in a vote dominated by economic grievances, high youth unemployment and fallout from last years Gen Z protests and Julys mass crossing into Ceuta. Nearly 16 million registered voters face an electorate skewed to older cohorts; only about 4% of registrants are aged 1824. Results are expected Thursday.
The Authenticity and Modernity Party has won the most seats in Morocco's parliamentary election, but no party has an outright majority. PAM will need to form a coalition to govern while turnout remains historically low. The king will appoint the prime minister from the largest party. Youth discontent and calls for better public services persist as the country prepares for the 2030 World Cup.
Fatima Zahra El Mansouri has been named Morocco's first female prime minister after PAM won the most seats in the parliamentary elections. She is tasked by King Mohammed VI to form a government and will lead negotiations to build a coalition. Turnout was the lowest in two decades as PAM edges ahead of rivals. El Mansouri has previously served as Marrakech mayor and housing minister.
Morocco has formed a coalition government led by Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri of PAM. The coalition includes Istiqlal and two smaller left-wing parties, holding a narrow majority in Parliament. The government faces rising living costs, unemployment, and public service needs ahead of 2030 World Cup preparations.
