Kenya Wildlife Service has reported that 15 elephants have died in the Amboseli ecosystem between 24 June and 24 July after showing partial paralysis and rapid death. Preliminary laboratory work has detected a potential toxic substance, including traces described as cyanide by Kenyan officials; further toxicology and environmental testing are ongoing and authorities say there is no evidence of immediate risk to people.
Kenya Wildlife Service has found cyanide traces in elephant carcasses in the Amboseli–Tsavo corridor, with ten elephants showing paralysis before dying. While authorities caution that this is preliminary, conservationists urge caution and question the pesticide link amid broader regional pesticide use and cross-border trade.
Kenya has directed Tata Chemicals Magadi to leave Lake Magadi, citing lack of local jobs and value addition. Officials plan to bring in a new investor to build manufacturing facilities in Kajiado, including a glass factory and a chemical plant. Tata says it remains compliant and engaged as talks continue.
