Main Soviet security agency, 1954–1991, now myth and symbol of intrigue
The FBI director is planning a visit to Russia in the fall, with stops in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The trip would be the first by an FBI director to Russia since 2013, and hosts are likely to be the FSB. The move comes as lawmakers push for tougher sanctions over Ukraine and as U.S.-Russia tensions remain high.
CIA Director John Ratcliffe has visited Moscow after a U.S. C-17 transport landed at Vnukovo, flight-tracking data shows. Russian and U.S. officials have not detailed the meetings. U.S. sources told Axios that Washington asked Kyiv to pause strikes while the delegation travelled; Moscow later confirmed Ratcliffe met Russian security officials.
Russia has held a three-day parliamentary election from Sept. 18–20 that is set to return a United Russia-dominated State Duma. Most anti-war candidates were barred, the liberal Yabloko party was disqualified from the nationwide list, voting is being held in Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine, and Moscow reported large drone attacks and a sustained cyberattack on electronic voting in the capital.
