Endorheic freshwater lake at the crossroads of Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon
Nigeria has freed 308 people who had been held captive for months after a joint military, police and counter-terrorism operation recovered hostages from Kainji Lake national park. The group includes 163 people taken in February from Woro in Kwara state and 145 taken mainly in Niger state; survivors are receiving medical checks at an army facility.
The Nigerian government has reportedly engaged in a ceasefire with a Boko Haram faction led by Bakura Doro, with initial calm observed for about three months. The truce covers Ngoshe area and involves negotiations that could include a ransom; authorities deny paying. The arrangement excludes ISWAP and may be temporary, with attacks largely halted but the broader insurgency continuing.
