Researchers have published long-term data showing that very high blood levels of the tau marker p‑tau217 predict a 38% risk of cognitive impairment within five years and 78% within ten. Trials are using the test to recruit volunteers while Scotland has started a primary‑care rollout of p‑tau testing to study real‑world use.
The UK trial is testing Trontinemab in 55–80-year-olds with high p-tau217 levels to see if dementia can be delayed or prevented. About 1,600 participants globally will be recruited over four to six years, with initial screening beginning this week at the Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
