A new small wild cat, Leopardus tilcayo, was identified in Bolivia’s Yungas; biologist Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz helped confirm the species after a call about a “weird cat.”
Researchers have confirmed Leopardus tilcayo as a distinct tiger-cat species from Bolivia, based on genetic data. The cat measures about 46 cm in length and weighs around 1.4 kg. Five tiger-cat lineages are now recognised, expanding the group beyond the previously accepted three species. The discovery highlights biodiversity in South American mountain forests and the need for conservation.
