Merck wins biotech praise as Lipfendra FDA hurdle clears; biotech IPOs surge and debates over vaccines spark scrutiny of pharma policy.
The White House has proposed phased tariffs on imported generic medicines, arguing for a U.S.-based manufacturing boost. The plan starts with two years of zero tariffs, followed by 100% and then 200% levies, to spur domestic production. Industry groups warn the move could raise prices for patients while onshoring efforts face structural hurdles. Major manufacturers say margins are thin and shifting production could take years.
The experimental mRNA cancer vaccine, intismeran, has been tested in a phase 3 trial with 1,000+ melanoma patients. It is personalised to each patient by analysing tumors and targets neoantigens. When given with pembrolizumab, it aims to boost the immune response and extend cancer-free time. Results indicate reduced recurrence risk, but long-term survival remains to be seen. Trials also explore other cancers.
Clinical trial data show patients with surgically removed melanoma who received a personalized mRNA vaccine alongside standard treatment have a 42% lower risk of cancer returning within two years. The vaccine targets tumor neoantigens and is tailored to each patient’s mutations. Results have raised hopes for broader cancer applications, though overall survival benefits remain unproven.
