Niger's military junta has provisionally stripped opposition figure Mariama Djibrine of Nigerien nationality, citing a 2024 terrorism database. The move comes as dissent is sharply curtailed since the 2023 coup. Djibrine chairs a new Sahel-democrats alliance, which launched in Belgium in May 2026 to push for constitutional rule in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso.
Kevin Rideout has been released after more than nine months in captivity in Niger and is in the care of U.S. officials. SIM International has said he is in good health and will soon reunite with his wife and children. Details about who held him and where he was freed remain unclear as Sahel violence continues.
Soldiers have attacked Base 101 at Niamey’s Diori Hamani International Airport and fired on sites near the presidential district overnight, triggering hours of clashes with forces loyal to junta leader General Abdourahamane Tchiani. State television briefly went off air. Authorities have said security forces are regaining control after Russia’s Africa Corps intervened and dozens of mutineers were killed or detained.
