Lebanese economist and former central bank governor under graft scrutiny
Lebanon’s public prosecutor has issued an arrest warrant for former Palestinian ambassador Ashraf Dabbour after questioning him. The judiciary is preparing to inform the Palestinian Authority that Dabbour is detained in Lebanon, with documents to be sent for possible extradition to the PA. Dabbour had served as ambassador to Beirut from 2012 to 2025 and faces corruption and embezzlement charges linked to his tenure.
Lebanon has passed legislation abolishing the death penalty and replacing it with life imprisonment with aggravated hard labour. Parliament has also approved a separate general amnesty law that will reduce some long sentences and free inmates detained more than 12 prison years while awaiting trial; the measures respond to severe prison overcrowding and political pressures.
