Pioneering African-American girl group of the 1950s
Arlene Smith, founder of the Chantels, has died in New York at 84. Smith helped spark a wave of girl groups in the 1950s with the hit “Maybe,” elevating Black female voices in doo-wop and shaping pop history. Her career later included teaching music in New York schools.
