The final court of appeal for civil and criminal cases in the UK
The Financial Conduct Authority has had parts of its £9.1bn motor‑finance compensation scheme suspended after legal challenges from Volkswagen Financial Services, Mercedes‑Benz Financial Services, Crédit Agricole Auto Finance and consumer group Consumer Voice. The Upper Tribunal has set hearings for December or February; lenders will not need to calculate or pay redress while legal proceedings continue, delaying mass payouts until at least 2027 if the scheme survives.
The UK Supreme Court has granted Palestine Action co-founder Huda Ammori permission to appeal the Court of Appeal ruling that upheld the group's proscription under terrorism laws. The appeal will be expedited and is expected between October and December; more than 3,500 arrests linked to the ban remain paused while the courts decide.
A London court of appeal has ruled that the so-called box-shifting practice, used to avoid business rates on vacant offices, cannot amount to beneficial occupation. The City of London Corporation, backed by local authorities, has argued that the scheme defers tax revenue for years. The decision threatens a £500m to £1bn annual loss in potential relief for landlords and a wider reform of business rates.
