The UN Environment Programme has published a report warning the world will cross the 1.5C warming threshold in the coming years. It recommends an overshoot plan — warming may peak around 1.8C, then decline toward 1.5C by century’s end, as emissions fall and carbon dioxide is removed. The report warns of decades of disasters, and calls for urgent, intensified action to limit warming.
Scientists have found that human-caused warming has made the hot, dry and windy weather that fuelled this summer’s wildfires far more likely: roughly 20 times more likely in central Spain and about twice as likely in parts of France. The results accompany mass evacuations, record burn areas and heavy smoke that has crossed international borders.
