What's happened
Rabbi Matondo has joined Hibernian on a contract until the end of the season, with the club holding an option to extend. The Wales international, 26, had been on trial at Easter Road after leaving Norway’s Brann. He becomes the first signing of new Hibs manager Marink Reedijk, who takes charge ahead of a league trip to Dundee United.
What's behind the headline?
The strategic read
- Matondo’s signing signals Hibs’ intent to inject pace and directness on the wings, a direct answer to opponents who press high. Reedijk has described Matondo as a player with a strong attitude and willingness to adapt, which aligns with the manager’s early plans.
- The deal underscores a broader trend in Scottish football where clubs are using short-term contracts to rebuild mid-season squads without long-term risk.
- This move could reboot Matondo’s career after limited game time at Brann and a mixed spell at Rangers, offering him a platform to rediscover form at a club with European ambitions.
What to watch
- How Matondo integrates into a new system and whether he can start immediate impact from the wing.
- The balance of Hibs’ squad as they juggle league duties with cup competitions.
- Reedijk’s ability to translate positive camp impressions into on-pitch results.
How we got here
Matondo, who has played for Manchester City, Schalke and Rangers, spent time at SK Brann before moving to Hibernian after a La Manga warm-weather camp impressed the coaching staff. The transfer marks a fresh start for both player and club as Reedijk begins his tenure.

Easter Road - Football stadium in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK
Easter Road is a football stadium located in the Leith area of Edinburgh, Scotland, which is the home ground of Scottish Premiership club Hibernian (Hibs). The stadium currently has an all-seated capacity of 20,421, which makes it the fifth-largest football stadium in Scotland. Easter Road is also known by Hibs fans as "The Holy Ground" or "The Leith San Siro". The venue has also been used to stage international matches, Scottish League Cup semi-finals and was briefly the home ground of the Edinburgh professional rugby union team. Hibs first played at the present site of Easter Road in 1893. The ground holds the record attendance for a Scottish match outside Glasgow, when 65,860 attended an Edinburgh derby on 2 January 1950. The size of the terracing was greatly reduced in the 1980s. After the publication of the Taylor Report, Hibs considered leaving Easter Road and moving to a different site (Straiton, near Loanhead, was mooted), but these plans were abandoned in 1994. Redevelopment of the stadium began in 1995 and was completed in 2010. The Easter Road pitch had a pronounced slope until it was removed in 2000.
