Rare Exeter printing of Declaration found in UK archives

What's happened

A volunteer at the UK National Archives has uncovered a vanishingly rare Exeter printing of the Declaration of Independence, printed in New Hampshire in July 1776. It is one of 11 surviving copies and the only one known outside the United States. The discovery helps trace how news of independence spread as the young nation fought for autonomy.

How we got here

The Exeter printing was produced to quickly disseminate the news of independence in July 1776. It was found among Royal Navy papers after the American privateer Dalton was captured off Portugal in 1776. The document was folded among Captain Eleazar Johnson’s papers and described as "another document" at the time, remaining undiscovered for centuries.

Our analysis
