Avalanche kills Broad Peak climbers

What's happened

An avalanche has struck a 10-person expedition on Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram. Rescue teams have recovered and identified multiple bodies, including famed climber Nirmal Purja’s teammates; harsh weather and rugged terrain are hampering further search and recovery. Officials and mountaineering groups are coordinating helicopter and ground efforts while investigations continue.

What's behind the headline?

What happened

The expedition has been swept by a large avalanche while moving between high camps on Broad Peak. Trackers showed rapid loss of altitude for several climbers and rescuers have located bodies and remains across a remote, heavily crevassed zone. Weather and terrain are preventing sustained helicopter access and ground teams are moving cautiously.

Why recovery is slow

  • Helicopters are ready but are being grounded by wind, snow and poor visibility, limiting air retrieval.
  • The avalanche appears to have carried climbers into areas above 6,000–6,600m that are steep, unstable and exposed to further slides.
  • Drone footage has shown multiple possible remains, but bad weather and crevasse risk are preventing safe extraction.

Who is affected and why it matters

  • The expedition included climbers from Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, China, the US and the UK. Several experienced high-altitude guides are among the dead, reducing local rescue capacity on short notice.
  • The death of high-profile climbers will redirect international attention to safety, acclimatisation practices and expedition oversight on Pakistan’s eight-thousanders.

Likely next steps

  • Authorities will continue coordinated helicopter sorties when weather permits and will send additional Sherpas and experienced high-altitude teams to mount ground recoveries.
  • Families and foreign governments will be involved in decisions about recovering remains and repatriation; Pakistan has said it is coordinating with relevant embassies.
  • The incident will increase pressure on operators to review route safety and client preparedness for late-summer conditions, and could reduce permit applications for the coming season.

Immediate consequence

This will force a prolonged, weather-dependent recovery operation and will deepen scrutiny of commercial expedition management on Broad Peak and neighbouring peaks.

How we got here

Broad Peak, an 8,047m Karakoram peak on the China–Pakistan border, has attracted international expeditions. The 10-person team, led by Nepal-born British climber Nirmal Purja, had been ascending from Camp II to Camp III when an avalanche struck around midday on Thursday. Gilgit-Baltistan authorities, the Alpine Club of Pakistan and expedition operators have been coordinating recovery efforts.

Our analysis

The Alpine Club of Pakistan and local officials have provided the initial account of the incident and the composition of the team. The Independent reported detailed identifications and personal profiles, saying Elite Exped confirmed multiple deaths and naming Nirmal Purja’s colleagues and other climbers recovered. Al Jazeera and Al Jazeera Staff supplied a list of expedition members and noted Pakistan’s challenging conditions; Al Jazeera reported that officials had identified Pur Bahadur Gurung, Mallory Geis and Nadhira Al Harthy among recovered bodies. The BBC and Bloomberg carried Elite Exped’s confirmation and obituary-style details about Purja’s record climbs. Regional statements and police Facebook posts cited by the New York Post and France 24 described rescue helicopters being on standby but grounded and the suspension of search activities when weather worsened. The Guardian and The Independent quoted Purja’s business partner as noting tracker movement after the initial descent, a detail that offered limited hope but did not change the grim recovery picture. Together, the sources show consistent factual reporting about the avalanche, the multinational composition of the team and the operational difficulties; reports vary only in the number of bodies recovered at the time of publication and in personal detail about individual climbers.
