How we got here
Tensions in northern Ethiopia have escalated since seven armed groups formed the Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival, aiming to topple the Addis Ababa government. The TPLF previously controlled Tigray from 1991 to 2018 before Abiy Ahmed’s rise, and the Pretoria Peace Agreement of 2022 sought to end hostilities. The current spike in violence risks disrupting aid corridors and deepening displacement.
