What's happened
Fighting in northern Ethiopia has intensified since September 2026, with federal forces gaining ground and recapturing Mekelle’s Alula Aba Nega Airport. The conflict risks a regional spillover as Eritrea, Egypt and Sudan are accused of backing opponents, while civilians face a growing humanitarian toll.
What's behind the headline?
Brief
- The latest surge in fighting has led to rapid changes on the ground, with Mekelle's airport among several airfields seized and then contested.
- The conflict has drawn regional actors into a widening confrontation, raising the specter of a broader Horn of Africa crisis.
- Domestic humanitarian needs are accelerating as civilians are displaced and access for aid remains constrained.
Writing outlook
This update will likely shape regional security calculations and international responses in the near term, including diplomatic disengagements and potential sanctions. The narrative emphasizes shifting control of strategic hubs like airports and supply routes, underscoring the fragile nature of any peace process.
How we got here
The renewed clashes began after a seven-party rebel coalition led by the TPLF launched attacks in September 2026, breaking the Pretoria Agreement. Federal forces are pushing north toward Mekelle, following earlier rebel seizures of airports around Tigray. Eritrea severed ties amid accusations of involvement, which the Eritrean government denies. Reuters, AFP, and other outlets have reported on looting and security vacuums in Mekelle as fighting continues.
Our analysis
Al Jazeera, Reuters, AFP, France 24, Arab News, MSF, and others report on the rapid gains by federal forces, the status of Mekelle, and concerns over regional involvement. Quotes from residents and officials illustrate fear of looting and lawlessness as security deteriorates. The coverage highlights the breakdown of the Pretoria Agreement and the humanitarian toll, with varying claims about which actors control key sites.
