What's happened

The US has carried out repeated air and naval strikes across Iran to degrade Tehran's ability to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks on US bases and Gulf allies, and the IRGC has warned civilians near US forces to stay away; the exchanges have closed much of the strait and pushed oil prices higher.

How we got here

Hostilities resumed after a June memorandum of understanding collapsed. Both sides are fighting over control of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane that has been largely closed by attacks, sending global oil prices up and disrupting trade.

The coverage shows consistent reporting of strikes and reprisals but different emphases. The Guardian (Mabel Banfield-Nwachi) reports the IRGC warning to civilians to "stay out of a radius of 500 metres" from US forces and cites Iranian claims of drone attacks on US personnel in Bahrain and Jordan, while also quoting Jordanian and Kuwaiti statements that interceptions caused no casualties.
